The Importance of SPF

The acronym SPF stands for sun protection factor, and it’s found in sunblock and sunscreen. While most people have probably heard of SPF before, there is often some confusion about how it works. While all SPF protects against the sun’s harmful rays, some including both UVA and UVB, it’s the SPF number that you need to pay attention to.

It works like this: the higher the SPF, the more rays the sunblock will protect you against. For example, SPF 50 blocks 98% of the sun’s rays, while SPF 15 only blocks about 93%. It is important to note that SPF 50 is the highest SPF you can get, and anything over 50% actually blocks less than SPF 50. Furthermore, there is no such thing as a sunblock that blocks 100% of the sun.

Properly applied, sunscreen should last about two hours, even if you haven’t been physically active or in the water.
