Thankfully, there are things you can do to help minimize your exposure to these harmful rays and keep your skin safe not just this summer but year-round. Here’s what you need to know about UV light and your skin and how Cinzia Spa in Myrtle Beach can help!
What Is UV Light?
Ultraviolet light is radiation emitted from the sun via three different forms: UVA, UVB, and UVC. Thankfully, the earth’s ozone layer filters out most UVC light; however, it can still be present in sunlamps and tanning beds.
UVA and UVB light, on the other hand, are why we need sunscreen. These harmful rays can easily reach us and permanently damage our skin.
Protecting Yourself From UV Light
So, aside from staying indoors or covering up from head to toe when you go outdoors, how can you protect yourself from dangerous UV light? The answer is sunblock. Sunblock can help you block out the sun’s harmful rays.
You may have noticed an “SPF” number on your bottle of sunblock before and wondered what it means. Thankfully, once you know, you know, so here’s a handy primer for determining which SPF you should use.
The formula is simple: the higher the SPF of your sunscreen, the more rays it will protect you against, but there is no SPF that will block all of the sun’s rays. Take SPF 50, for example. SPF 50 is the highest sun protection you can get. When you use SPF 50, you can expect your sunblock to block approximately 98 percent of the sun’s rays. On the other hand, when you use SPF 15, you can expect it to protect you from about 93 percent of the sun’s rays.
How To Use SPF
Applying sunblock is akin to using any lotion. Coat the skin evenly over the entire body, and reapply every two hours, even if you aren’t swimming, sweating, or inactive in the sun.
Furthermore, wear sunblock even if you aren’t going to the beach. Whether running in and out of the store, driving to work, or simply walking the dog, you should be protecting yourself from the sun’s harmful rays year-round, anytime you go outdoors. You should even wear sunblock if you sit by a window.
What Kind Of Sunscreen Do You Recommend?
At Cinzia Spa in Myrtle Beach, we carry the Coola line of sun protection, which includes products for both the face and body. Best of all, the Coola line is cruelty-free clean beauty, so you know you’re only putting safe ingredients on your skin.
When looking for sunblock, look for a broad spectrum, which will block both the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. We recommend avoiding tanning beds for protection against UVC light, as they can be more dangerous for your skin than the sun itself.
